4 Benefits of Cycling

One of the joys of cycling is that it can be done at any age, either as a solitary exercise or with friends and family.  Cycling for exercise has grown enormously over the last fifty years and it’s now estimated that there are over 1 billion bikes worldwide.  Riding a bike is great for the body, mind and social interaction.

Relieving Stress

After a stressful day or week, there’s nothing better than getting on your bike and heading out into the countryside for some mind-clearing fresh air and change of scenery.  As long as you switch off your phone, you’ll be free from business calls, home emergencies and emails.  Give yourself this time to unwind and enjoy the freedom that cycling allows without any outside pressures interfering.

Cardiovascular Health

Regular cycling reduces your chances being a victim of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes.  The physical act of cycling naturally improves your lung and heart function, while strengthening your heart muscles and reducing your resting pulse rate.  A Danish study conducted over 14 years monitored 30,000 subjects between the ages of 20 and 93. The results clearly showed that cycling helps prevent heart disease.

Muscle Strengthening and Toning

Cycling strengthens and tones many muscles within the body.  Even though the act of cycling concentrates on the muscles in the lower body, our arm, shoulder and back muscles also get a good workout.  Cycling is all about balance and, without a strong core, our balance can be affected.  Getting on a bike regularly naturally increases our core stability and balance.

Socialising

Cycling is a great way of meeting new people who enjoy the same things you do.  Most cyclists are passionate about their sport and training, and love the share their enthusiasm with like minded souls.  Joining a cycling club is the perfect way to make new friends when you move to a different area or just to meet different people in your local area.  Socialising helps prevent loneliness and depression.  So cycling gives you everything you need to remain physically and mentally well.
