How do we know we're getting enough sleep?

There are six clear signs that we are getting enough sleep: -

  1. Waking up without an alarm

Isn’t it wonderful to wake up naturally without the sound of an alarm penetrating your sleep?  Patrick Fuller is a sleep scientist at Harvard University, and he says “If you wake up naturally without an alarm clock, as opposed to forcing yourself out of bed, then you’ve probably had a good snooze.”

  1. No Coffee

If you find you’re not thinking about coffee, or other highly caffeinated drinks, first thing in the morning or throughout the day, the chances are you’ve had a really good night’s sleep and don’t need that extra kick to perform at your best.

  1. Stable Weight

The National Sleep Foundation states, “On average, the less people sleep, the more they weigh, and the more likely they are to put on weight over time.”  So, if your weight is stable, you can assume that you’re getting enough sleep.

  1. Clear and Healthy-Looking Skin

Lack of sleep obviously causes stress and stress is known to have a detrimental effect on the skin.  It can look dull, dry or even break out.  Dark circles appear under the eyes.  Getting enough sleep makes our skin look clear and healthy and our eyes are bright, with no dark circles underneath.

  1. Feeling Cheerful

Waking up in the morning and feeling cheerful is a sure sign that you’ve had a good night’s sleep.  This cheery disposition will make you feel motivated and able to handle whatever life throws at you that day.

  1. No Cravings

Jaime Mass, who’s a registered dietician says that “when you’re tired, you’re more likely to crave carbohydrates and sugar to pick yourself up.”  If you find you’re not craving French fries and a brownie, then the chances are you’ve had a good night’s sleep.
