Mmmmm you’ve gotta love berries…

Berries have been eaten by man for millennia.  Ancient man, or rather ancient woman, foraged for these Superfoods and enjoyed the colourful, nutrient rich gifts from Mother Nature.  They contain exceptionally high levels of antioxidants, making them the perfect food for fighting off disease and maintaining a healthy body.

Blueberries

Blueberries have it all.  They are great anti inflammatories and have antibacterial qualities as well.  They are full of antioxidants and have high levels of vitamin B, C, E and K.  Blueberries also contain anthocyanins and resveratol which are phytochemicals that help prevent and fight cancer.

Strawberries

Strawberries are the world’s favourite berry.  They have a high vitamin C content and one cup a day will provide you with your daily Vitamin C requirement.  The vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants in a strawberry, make it the perfect berry for protecting against cancer, heart disease and inflammatory illnesses.

Raspberries

Luscious raspberries contain ellagic acid which is rich in antioxidants.  They are little powerhouses of minerals and vitamins which help us to ward off illness and reach our goal of optimum health.

Blackberries

Blackberries can be found in hedgerows around the world.  One of the joys of picking them from the hedgerows is that they probably won’t be covered in pesticides – although, of course, you can’t guarantee it!  Blackberries are packed full of minerals, vitamins and fibre and also contain lycopene which helps to protect your eyesight.

Cranberries

Cranberries are native to North America.  They are a bitter fruit, so they are generally eaten dried or as a juice.  Cranberry juice contains high levels of vitamin C, antioxidants and salicylic acid.  The antioxidant qualities of cranberries are very high and help protect the body against diseases such as cancer and those that attack the immune system.

Cranberry juice is excellent for preventing and treating urinary tract infections.  The salicylic acid in cranberries also acts as an anti-clotting agent.  Cranberries are also known to help protect the heart from disease and recent studies have shown that cranberries help prevent tooth cavities.
