Vitamins that Improve Vision

We have all heard about carrots giving us the ability to see better at night... lol

Certain vitamins can possibly improve eye health, particularly those problems associated with aging, such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A performs many functions in regard to eye health.

  • It helps to maintain a clear cornea
  • It helps you to see in dull light
  • It helps prevent xerophthalmia, a disease which is actually rare in developed countries.  However, if contracted, it can eventually lead to blindness
  • It helps prevent macular degeneration
  • It helps prevent cataracts

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, as a powerful antioxidant, helps prevent free radical damage to the eyes.  It’s essential for: -

  • Helping prevent macular degeneration and cataracts
  • Vitamin C is essential for producing collagen which provides structure to the eye

Vitamin B

Vitamins B12, B9 and B6 in particular have been found to help reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Vitamin B1 is also important; not only is it thought to help reduce the risk of cataracts, as an anti-inflammatory, it’s possible it can help treat uveitis, a condition which can lead to blindness.

Vitamin B2 is a great antioxidant which helps reduce oxidative stress throughout the body, including the eyes.

Vitamin B3 is thought to help in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma.

Vitamin E

The powerful antioxidant properties of vitamin E make it essential for eye health, particularly those parts of the eye that can suffer from oxidative damage.  Vitamin E is thought to help protect against cataracts and macular degeneration

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in the eye, particularly in the retina and it’s therefore essential that the body receives enough of these fatty acids.  They are responsible for visual development and maintenance, and helpful in preventing age related problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
